Stranger Aeons

H. P. Lovecraft is arguably the most influential horror writer of the 20th century and one of the unsung prophets of our time. His obsession with vast, cosmic entities that can destroy our universe at a whim touches on archetypal fears and can be far more disturbing than any ghost story, or vampire tale. He was almost unknown when he wrote for the pulps in the beginning of the century, but now his influence has been acknowledged by everyone, from horror auteurs (Stephen King) to modern philosophers (Michel Houellebecq). He has also inspired a ridiculous number of Death Metal bands.

Veteran illustrator John Coulthart is no stranger to Lovecraft- having created a lot of artwork for the man’s stories. In his blog, he informs us about the release of a new documentary, called “Lovecraft: Fear Of The Unknown”. It’s by Frank Woodward and features interviews with famous fans, such as Neil Gaiman, John Carpenter, Guillermo Del Torro, Ramsey Campbell and others. You can check out more info at:

And while we are on the subject of Lovecraft, lets not forget the recent art book A Lovecraft Retrospective: Artists Inspired by HP Lovecraft , which features beautiful and disturbing illustrations by coulthart, H. P. Giger, Virgil Finley, Lee Brown Coyne, Michael Whelan, Frank Frazetta, Mike Mignola and other experts of Lovecraftian horror, plus an introduction by Harlan Ellison:
