Not much of an introduction is needed for these British doom/goth/death metal veterans. After the release of their latest CD ‘For lies I Sire’, My Dying Bride bring forth an EP the title of which comes from a track that’s included in the above mentioned CD and is the first of the four tracks included in this EP. This track is a typical yet powerful example of what My Dying Bride are all about, brilliant as usual!!
The second track is a wonderful cover of a traditional English song, namely ‘Scarborough Fair’, a song that’s been covered several times, also by metal bands such as Leaves Eyes and Queensryche. Well, this version seems to be just beautiful! Could be like the perfect soundtrack to a dark romantic fairytale! Slow, gloomy with Aarons vocals suit the song perfectly, excellent violin sounds and great guitar work!! No words can actually describe the feeling …
Next track is another cover song from a band called Swans. I haven’t heard of that band before and thus cannot say much about them. All I know is that it is some kind of a punk band… Anyway ‘Failure’ cover is just as fantastic as ‘Scarborough Fair’. Aaron performing vocals in a very ‘theatrical’ approach which actually work perfectly to leave and make this track another powerful tune…
Fourth and last –but not least- track of the album is a live recording of one of the first songs they ever wrote… ‘Vast Choirs’ that is, we also experienced it live here in Athens about a month ago. This was recorded in Belgium back in 2008. The original version is included in the bands debut ‘As the flower withers’ What a track really… old schoold death/doom metal… and that Aarons laugh right in the beginning… Aah good old times!!!
In addition there is video clip included for ‘Bring me victory’ track, really enjoyable, for those who haven’t already seen it… A definitely great EP, especially for these 2 cover songs. Go get it people!!
