Sweet Tooth (Comic book)
A decade ago the Affliction raged like a forest fire, killing billions, and the only children born since are a new breed of human/animal hybrid. Gus is one of these endangered children, a boy with a sweet soul, a sweeter tooth – and the features of a deer.
But kids like Gus have a price on their heads. When vicious hunters descend on his isolated forest home, a mysterious and violent man called Jepperd rescues Gus. Thu hulking drifter promises to lead Gus to “The Preserve” a fabled safe-haven for hybrid children.
When I came across this new release from Vertigo, I was kind of skeptic. Half humans and half animals, boys with antlers come on now lets be serious – but then again I thought Vertigo never let me down before, should I just have faith and invest in this new series?
And I did. And now that I have read the five first issues of Sweet Tooth I have to admit that I was more than happily surprised. Mr Jeff Lemire, the man behind the story and the art manages to transform a scenario that should have been a children’s book to a fantastic adult – post apocalyptic vision of the fate of humankind.
Lemire’s drawing in Sweet Tooth balances from Disney like figures to blood spitting guts scenes that are simply breathtaking.
I like it so far. It makes me have expectations. Let’s see what happens.
