The San Diego ComicCon concluded the other day. As usual, there was a huge number of cool news concerning the world of comics, science fiction and other geek obsessions of ours. Among the barrage of cool stuff, from the upcoming Green Lantern and Avengers movies, to people dressed- up as anime characters, there was a teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s new project, Sucker Punch. It’s the story of…, whatever really, there isn’t much sense to be made from the premise (basically, young nubile girl gets sent to an asylum in the 50s and escapes to a fantasy world), but the trailer looks visually stunning and shallow as fuck. Inexplicably, it involves spectacularly hot actresses (including Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens and Jena Malone) fighting in the WWI trenches and in some other planet with dragons, mecha warriors and B- 52 Bombers. Also, Scott Glenn shows up as their mentor or something. I have no idea what’s going on. You wouldn’t mistake Snyder for an auteur or anything, but unlike something like Watchmen- with its collossal cultural baggage- Sucker Punch is an original idea. I am intrigued:
