Candlemass Wacken Open Air 07/08/2010
Appropriately, Candlemass are on at the Party Stage at nightfall. Immortal are playing on the bigger stage at the same time and their show seems quite impressive, but I am in no mood for corpsepaint and pyro at the moment.
As one would expect from one of the essential doom metal bands, Candlemass are heavy. Really, really heavy. The riffs are elephantine, the pace is funereal and the people watching are busy filling their glasses with beer and trying to roll joints in the dark, to better appreciate the crushing weight. On the other hand, their present singer Robert Lowe (who is also in the excellent Solitude Aeturnus) is hilarious and that kinda offsets the darkness of the music. How ya doin’, he mumbles amiably in a Texan drawl, like a doom version of Bill Hicks. Thanks for the beer and the Jger man! Lets drink to you guys. You guys are awesome! etc., etc. You have to like the guy.
They do some of their old stuff (The Samarithan, At the Gallows End), some newer stuff (If I ever Die, Emperor of the Void, Hammer Of Doom) and they finish with (what else?) the monolithic Solitude. Their most recent album is already a doom classic by the way. They are preaching to the converted I guess, but then, there’ s plenty of us.
