Edguy – Wacken Open Air 07/07/2010

Edguy’s mix of sugar- coated power metal and 80s hard rock is certainly not for everyone. They seem to be huge in their home country though, as their afternoon slot is packed with enthusiastic Germans. They deserve it though. Although the music is rather derivative, their sense of humour and boundless energy of frontman Tobias Sammet makes them one of the most fun gigs of the festival.

Sammet spends most of the set joking in German, while acknowledging the rest of us occasionally. He admits that he loves all of us, as he wants all our money anyway. He wheels out Helloween’s Markus Grosskopf for Lavatory Love Machine, gets everyone to bring out the lighters for the unbelievably melodramatic power ballad Save Me and gets some minus points for me for not playing Dragonfly or Rocket Ride. Generally, a ridiculously good time though. Good for them.

setelist:
1.Dead or Rock
2.Speedhoven
3.Tears of a Mandrake
4.Vain Glory Opera
5.Lavatory Love Machine (with Markus Grosskopf)
6.Superheroes (with Markus Grosskopf)
7.Save Me
8.Sacrifice
9.King of Fools
