How Many Miles To Babylon? A small appreciation of Diana Wynne Jones (16 August 1934 – 26 March 2011)
I was very saddened to read the news of Diana Wynne Jones’ death on Saturday. She was one of my favorite authors.
Jones was perhaps best known as the author of Howl’s Moving Castle, which was made into a wonderful animated film by Hayao Miyazaki and she has been an obvious influence on Neil Gaiman and J. K. Rowling. She was considered to be one of the great contemporary children’s authors. That’s fair enough- and several generations of children would agree- but her charming and often dark books are recommended for all ages. Her rich, enchanting worlds were often deadly and always interesting. And she wrote of myth, magic and parallel universes with grace, elegance and humour.
There is a good article about her legacy in The Guardian:

And a nice account from Neil Gaiman (who was her friend and was with her near the end) in his blog:

I am envious of those who will discover her work for the first time and glad because there are numerous of her books that I have still to read. Our condolences to her family and friends.
