Come From The Land Of The Ice And Snow
I never got into Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy. The 1st book in the series, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was a fairly entertaining thriller, but by book 2, I had had enough with the dull writing and ridiculous plotlines. I never read the third one. Life is too short.
To be fair to Larsson though, he did create one iconic character and that is more than most authors manage in a lifetime. His nominal protagonist, crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist was a lifeless stand- in for the author in both book and movie. But Lisbeth Salander, the angry punk hacker was the audience’s favorite. She wasn’t a realistic creation, more an avenging angel for everything that’s wrong with Swedish society, but she was badass so that’s OK.
Noomi Rapace gave a great performance as Salander in the Swedish film version and now Rooney Mara is going to be in the Hollywood version. Normally I hate American remakes of non- English speaking films (“See those little words that appear in the bottom of the screen dude? They are called subtitles. Read them.”). But this is David Fincher we are talking about. And he is starting to win me over.
The red band trailer of the film was leaked on the internet a few days ago and it looked fantastic. Partly because Fincher’s chilly visuals look unbelievably tense (the fantastic cast helps) and partly because of the soundtrack. It’s Trent Reznor (with Karen O from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs) remixing The Immigrant Song and it sounds absolutely epochal. Unfortunately the Sonny bloodhounds took it down almost immediately, but you can get an idea from the regular trailer. Enjoy:
