Locke & Key in MTV

Locke & Key is an ongoing mystery / horror comic, written by author Joe Hill. I have been a fan of Hill’s for a while, mostly due to his excellent ghost story Heart- Shaped Box (soon to be a film directed by Neil Jordan). Hill also happens to be the son of a little- known writer called Stephen King. Yep, THAT Stephen King:

Regardless of all that, Hill’s writing is quite different to his dad’s. King’s influence is there of course, and both of them have an inherent understanding of humanity at its best and worst. Hill however, is a bit more elegant and less “folksy” writer. And Locke & Key is a great piece of work, a creepy, disturbing story of a family and its’ decades- old connection to a shape- shifting demonic entity. Oh Hell, just check out Gabriel Rodriguez’s stunning artwork (all images taken from Rodriguez’s website: www.gr.cl):

It was supposed to be a TV series, directed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go, the video for Johnny Cash’s Hurt). The trailer for the pilot was shown in this year’s ComicCon and it looked great, but the funding never materialized and the idea was put on ice.

Until now. It turns out that MTV may be interested in picking up the series. Which would be a departure for MTV for two reasons:

a)      MTV isn’t used to dealing with horror / comic book material.

b)      All MTV series these days are utter shite (Brain- dead teenagers and Z- list celebrities that I want to kill using my teeth? No thanks MTV…).

In any case I am stoked. Fingers crossed!
