Mr. Crowley

Crowley artwork by John Coulthart (http://www.johncoulthart.com/decalcomania/al.html)

There was a priceless news story on the papers the other day. According to a new book, the mysterious deaths of several people associated with the opening of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber in Luxor in 1923 (the famous curse of Tutankhamun) were actually the work of Aleister Crowley. Apparently Crowley (the most famous occultist of the 20th century) arranged these events as a series of ritual killings. Apparently he was obsessed with ancient Egyptian mysticism and wanted revenge on   Howard Carter and his team, for unearthing the tomb.

It’s an interesting theory but it seems based on circumstantial evidence, conjecture and random gossip. I am sure that Thelemites and various Crowley accolites around the world will freak out over this, but it’s still a great story. Perhaps the most unbelievable thing in all this though, is the idea that Crowley would be involved in such an affair and keep it secret. The man was a prototypical rock star, shocking Victorian society with his omnisexual orgies and penchant for heroin and he spent most of his life spreading various rumours about how wicked he was (the press didn’t dub him “The Man We’d Like To Hang” for nothing). I don’t think he would avoid the opportunity to be associated with a mysterious ancient Egyptian curse. In fact, I suspect old Aleister would have loved the publicity.

PS: Thanks to Kimi from Lord Vicar, for bringing this awesome story to my attention:
