Satanic Majesties

Art by Arik Roper

There was a very interesting article in The Guardian the other day about occult rock, from Coven and Black Widow, to Ghost and The Devil’s Blood. I am really surprised to see a mainstream broadsheet paper like The Guardian covering such an underground phenomenon. They really did their homework too, talking to Cathedral’s Lee Dorrian (who may just be responsible for singlehandedly reviving the cult through his Rise Above Records) and the masked Pope dude from Ghost. The snide, clueless comments from people who blatantly Do Not Get It, are the icing on the cake (I swear, sometimes Guardian readers resemble Daily Mail readers who also happen to like The Wire).

I still can’t believe that such a niche musical flavour is talked about in the bloody Guardian though. At this rate next year, The Devil’s Blood will be in the Billboard Charts, Ghost will be selling out Madison Square Garden and Dorrian will be hosting the Oscars. Hail Satan…
