Anima Morte – The Nightmare Becomes Reality
Ah, Italian horror. Sexy witches, slavering demons, black gloves, pierced eyeballs, ridiculous “acting”, convoluted plots and buckets of gore. Oh, and eerie, beautiful music by the likes of Ennio Morricone, Goblin and Fabio Frizzi.
Anima Morte are from Sweden, but you wouldn’t know it from their music. The Nightmare Becomes Reality is essentially a celebration of the rich musical tradition of Italian horror movies, from Bava and Argento, to Fulci and Soavi. It’s a proggy evocation of the mood of the era (meaning lots of Mellotrons, Moogs and Hammonds) and it works deliciously. You can detect the influence of Keith Emerson’s Inferno soundtrack, the obligatory Goblin (especially in their metal- infused Demonia project and their Roller album) and of course, the awesome Fabio Frizzi, whose music for City of the Living Dead and Zombi 2 is perhaps the main point of reference here.
Make no mistake though, Anima Morte are not dry copyists. The album flows gorgeously like the music to the ultimate Italian horror flick and the many fanatics of that particular genre have every reason to celebrate. In fact, if you have any love for creepy music, you just got lucky. Enjoy…
