Orchid – Capricorn
For an album that sounds like it was recorded under the influence of magic mushrooms, midnight screenings of Blood On Satan’s Claw and spins of Sabbath’s Vol. 4, Capricorn sounds surprisingly beautiful. Not something one often gets to say about doom. Not that it lacks titanic riffs or an almost tribal rythm section, but it also includes some wonderfully fuzzy psychedelic flourishes among the crunching guitars. it’s an album that will remind you of the seventies, not because the production is “retro”, but because it’s really fucking awesome. From the moment opener Eyes Behind the Wall gallops from the speakers (melting my face off in the process), the catchy melodies never stopped.
PS: Like all of The Curch Within‘s releases, this one has killer artwork. Tattoo artist Theo Mindell’s work complements the music beautifully and there is also a special edition that looks like an ancient grimoire. Snap it up if you find it.
